Vintage Rail Journeys Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page provides answers to the most common questions we get asked about our rail tours.
If you have any other questions about our rail tours or train, please feel free to contact us on 1300 421 422.
What mobility do guests need to have?
Our rail tours require a reasonable level of fitness and a good level of mobility. Heritage trains are not designed to accommodate wheelchair or walker reliant passengers. If booking a Twin Cabin, one member of your party will need to be able to climb a ladder up to and down from the top bunk. You will need to be able to embark and disembark the train, coaches and other methods of transportation without assistance, handle your own luggage, walk moderate distances, stand comfortably and climb steps and stairs.
Can I bring my walker / walking stick with me?
Heritage trains are not designed to accommodate wheelchair or walker reliant passengers as the corridors are very narrow with tight turns and heavy inter carriage connecting doors. A walking stick, if for stability, can be brought on-board and kept in your compartment.
Can you store my medication in a fridge?
Yes. Please discuss this with your Hospitality Attendant when you board the train.
How much luggage can I bring with me?
There is limited room in your compartment so please bring one ‘carry on’ bag (48cm h x 34cm w x 23cm d) per person and a garment bag. Both Twin and Single cabins have hanging closets which will take 3-4 garments per person. In the Twin cabin there is a luggage nook which will take 2 ‘carry on’ bags. In the Single cabin your luggage can be placed on the luggage racks above your footrest. Slim or soft luggage can be stowed under your seat.
Do I need to bring my own shampoo and conditioner?
No. We provide most of your toiletry needs on the train including shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap and moisturiser, so you don’t have to pack your own unless you want to. Don’t forget your toothbrush and toothpaste though, as well as any medications you might need!
Do you cater to dietary needs?
Our on-board chef can cater to most dietary requirements. Please provide your requirements when booking. If things change over time feel free to let us know before you board. You can also let your Hospitality Attendant know of any changes when you board the train.
I need to be forward-facing. Can you accommodate this?
Yes, you are able to request forward facing-cabins, however, as approximately half of our cabins face forward, we are unable to guarantee a forward facing cabin depending on the number of requests we receive for any given departure. Please note, the train will also change direction during the tour and your cabin will be facing in the opposite direction. Please feel free to spend this time in the Lounge Carriage.
Can I smoke onboard?
No, smoking is not permitted.
What is the dress attire on board?
It’s your holiday and we want you to be comfortable so smart casual attire is recommended.
We also recommend:
- Warm clothes for Outback Experiences as mornings and evenings in the Outback can be cool
- Hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes for your Off Train Experiences.
Is there WIFI onboard?
Yes. Wi-Fi is available in the Lounge carriage.
Please note that Wi-Fi availability is dependent on mobile network coverage, and as we travel through some remote locations it may not always be available.
Is there 240 volts available in the rooms?
Yes. There is at least one 240 volt outlet in each room. This can be used for CPAP machines.
Do I need any cash or credit cards onboard?
As our journeys are all-inclusive you will not need to buy anything unless you choose to purchase souvenirs, which you can do onboard utilising our EFTPOS or credit card facilities. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide any cash out on our trains.
Can children come on the rail tour?
Yes. We do not have a No Child Policy as such, however, the tour has been developed for an older demographic and there are no children’s discounts. It is up to the guest to make a decision on whether it is something that they would like their children to do. There are no special menus nor children friendly Off Train Experiences.
Can I bring my dog?
No, the only animals permitted are specially trained dogs for the vision and hearing impaired.
Can I fly out the same day as the train arrives?
We want you to enjoy your journey without concerns over flight times. We therefore would recommend you allow for an overnight stop before connecting to domestic or international flights. Vintage Rail Joruneys does not accept liability for any missed connections due to late train arrivals.
What is the temperature on board the train?
All our services are air-conditioned, with the temperature averaging 22 degrees.
We recommend packing layers of clothing for the different temperatures (inside and outside the train).
What are the meal times onboard the train?
In your cabin when you first board the train, you will find a card with the breakfast, lunch and dinner meal times for your journey. Your Hospitality Attendant will advise you of the process. If you have any special requests regarding meal times, please speak with a member of our team.
Is medical assistance available?
To ensure your safety and well-being, our staff members onboard are trained to administer basic first aid.
